Two 1920 postcards of Marina Beach In British Era Madras. The 13 km Marina Beach is one of the longest in the world. Mountstuart Elphinstone Grant-Duff, Governor of Madras, developed the beach and the promenade in 1881. Pictured in one of the postcards are the Aquarium and the Presidency College.
The college is one of the oldest government arts colleges in India opened in 1840. It is one of two Presidency Colleges in India established by the British, the other is in Kolkata. India’s first aquarium was built in 1909. Under the earlier initiative of the Madras Governor Lord Ampthill.
