The Breaking Of Dawn On The Backwaters of Cochin, 1910 Postcard

A 1910 postcard that shows the beautiful breaking of dawn on the Backwaters of Cochin (Kochi). Cochin has a past with a rich history. Shown are some fishing boats lying out of the water. Also visible is a fisherman plying his boat.

Also known as Fort Cochin, this is because it had a fort built by the Portuguese which was the first European fort in India. The Dutch defeated the Portuguese and took control reducing the fortress to half its size.

A century later the British this time would defeat the Dutch and took control of Cochin. They razed to the ground whatever was left of the Portuguese Fort. Today there are no signs of the fortification but the name Fort Cochin still stands.

The Chinese Fishing Nets prolific in this area are a big draw today for tourists. It was first introduced by the Chinese maritime traders around the 13th century. Kochi like Kerala is blessed with numerous backwaters. The backwaters are a network of interconnected canals, rivers, lakes, and streams. It cuts across the whole length of the state.
