Tellicherry On The Malabar Coast, 1922 Print
This is a 1922 print of the Tellicherry Coast. Measures 11 x 8¼ inches. Before India’s independence, Tellicherry, now Thalassery was a part of the region of North Malabar under the Madras Presidency. Where once the Dutch, British, Portuguese, Chinese, Arab, and so on had considerable influence over the spice trade there. Today it is under Kerala state and is home to the world-famous Tellicherry pepper.
A top grade pepper desired by gastronomes and connoisseurs worldwide. Pepper originated in Kerala’s Malabar coast. It was indeed an important spice for ancient Rome, Greece, and even Pharaonic Egypt. Brought there by ancient Greek and Roman maritime traders. Thalassery was an important spice trade center centuries ago. Pepper made such an impact that it influenced world history and exploration to a considerable extent.
