Swearing-In of Viceroy Lord Mountbatten In Delhi, 1947 Print
A 1947 print of the swearing-in of the new and last viceroy of India Lord Mountbatten in Delhi. The print is a page from The Illustrated London News of April 12, 1947. This is one of the most iconic pictures just before India attained independence from the British Raj.
The image shows Lord Mountbatten being sworn in as Governor General and Viceroy by the then Chief Justice Sir Patrick Spens. The ceremony was held on March 24, 1947. He would be the new and the last viceroy of India. since India would go on to get independence from British rule by August 15, 1947. Lord Mountbatten’s wife Lady Edwina Mountbatten is also seen standing on the right side.
