Steam Railway Trains In British India – 6 Photo Postcards
Six photo postcards of steam railway trains in the time of British India from 1880 to 1905. The 1st postcard is of the South Indian Railway, which was formed in 1874. The Southern Railway, Madras and Southern Mahratta Railway, and the Mysore Railway merged to form the Southern Railway Zone in 1951.
The 2nd, 3rd, and 4th postcards are of the Great Indian Peninsula Railway’s Bengal Nagpur goods and passenger trains. The Great Indian Peninsula Railway or GIPR is now Central Railway. The GIPR had its headquarters at Bori Bunder, which later was occupied by the Victoria Terminus (Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus).
The opening of the Bombay to Thana line in 1853 marked the starting of railways in India. The Bengal Nagpur Railway was formed by the GIPR in 1887. The 5th and 6th postcards are that of the Bombay-Poona Mail, which was also part of the Great Indian Peninsula Railway. The Bengal Nagpur Railway merged with the Eastern Railway in 1952.
Did you know – the GIPR that ran the first train from Bombay to Thana in 1853, it became part of the Central Railway in 1951.
