Panoramic View of Old Delhi From Juma Masjid, 1872 Photo

An 1860 photo with a panoramic of Old Delhi taken from the Juma Masjid’s minaret. The photo was taken by Samuel Bourne, he was a prolific British photographer who arrived in India in 1863. Bourne remained only for seven years. Within this period he established a photography studio in Calcutta, called Bourne & Shepherd,  with partners, Arthur Robertson and Charles Shepherd.

It was however the photography works of Bourne that the outlook of the firm was shaped. It was one of the longest-operating studios in India, closing down as late as 2016. Shown here is one of his most famous works of Delhi from the 19th century. A panoramic view, taken from the top of one of the minarets of the Jama Masjid. The walled city was created within the precincts of Delhi by Shah Jahan who called it Shahjahanabad. This is when he decided to shift the capital from Agra to Shahjahanabad in 1639. Click on the photo for better view.

Did you know- the city came into prominence when the capital was shifted from Calcutta to Delhi after the announcement of King George V in the 1911 Durbar.
