Viceroy’s Viceregal Lodge Delhi – Old Photo 1910

This is an old 1910 photo of the Viceroy’s viceregal lodge in Delhi. Typical of colonial architecture the building hosted several British Viceroys until 1933. Built in 1902 this all-white building was the official residence and office of at least five Viceroys from 1912 to 1931. Before that, it was part of the British cantonment.

The “Delhi Conspiracy Commission” operated from here briefly. By 1933 Delhi University took over the building. Many historic events transited in its confines. Mahatma Gandhi and Jawahar Lal Nehru had stayed here. The Viceregal Lodge’s underground dungeon (it still exists) had imprisoned Bhagat Singh and his two comrades. The signing of the Gandhi-Irwin Pact took place here. Nehru and Mountbatten received their honorary degrees from the convocation hall that was once the grand ballroom.
