Newly Completed Victoria Memorial Calcutta, 5 Photos 1921

A collection of five small photos from 1921 showing the newly completed Victoria Memorial in Calcutta (Kolkata). The first photograph captures the stunning white marble monument in all its glory, soon after its completion. The second image shows marble blocks piled on the grounds, with the majestic memorial rising in the background.
The third and fourth photos depict bronze statues of Queen Victoria and Lord Curzon, key figures in British India’s history. The fifth image shows the memorial arch of King Edward VII, featuring the king on horseback at the southern end of the complex.
The Victoria Memorial, Calcutta’s most celebrated landmark, was conceived by Lord Curzon, one of British India’s most flamboyant viceroys. Dedicated to Queen Victoria after her death in 1901, the grand domed structure was completed in 1921. It was built using Makrana marble. Designed by British architect William Emerson in the Indo-Saracenic Revival style. The Memorial was financed through public donations from Indian princes, officials, and citizens alike. Did you know- the marble from Makrana, Rajasthan, was also used for the construction of the famous Taj Mahal in Agra.
