Bangalore Palace, 1900 Postcard

A 1900 postcard of the Royal Palace in Bangalore (Bengaluru). It was built by Rev. J Garrett a British educationist before being purchased by the Maharaja of Mysore Chamarajendra Wadiyar. The Maharaja renovated it further to a more impressive architectural design, as seen in this postcard.

Supposedly resembling a British castle with ramparts, bastions, and turrets. Since it was built in the English Tudor style it definitely looked a bit out of place. Nevertheless, still spectacular with its vast sprawling grounds. Although it nowhere compares to the Mysore Palace. The Britisher who did the landscaping of the Lalbagh in Bangalore was entrusted with the landscaping of this palace also.

The Bangalore Palace’s interior is no less stunning, although a bit tastelessly garish. Music concerts, cultural programs, and grand weddings are still organized on the palace grounds. Famous bands and performers like the Rolling Stones, Deep Purple, Elton John, etc, had performed here. The Maharaja of Mysore’s family still owns this property. Today it is a must-visit tourist attraction. Click on the photo for better view.

Did you know- in 1880 the maharaja had supposedly spent Rs 10 lakhs for this royal mansion with a built-up area of 45,000 square feet and 453 acres of ground.
