New Market British Era Calcutta, 1916 Postcard

An old 1916 photo postcard of the New Market in British-era Calcutta, now Kolkata. The New Market stood out as very European in British-era Calcutta. Sir Stuart Hogg, the chairman of the Calcutta Corporation at that time, initiated the move for the construction of a market. Which was formally opened in 1874. It was renamed Sir Stuart Hogg Market in 1903, in honor of Hogg’s great support.

But its earlier name New Market has stuck with the population even to this day. It is located on Lindsay Street once the haunt of Britishers. The European Quarter was close by and reaching Dalhousie Square, Lindsay Street, Chowringhee, and so on were within easy reach for the Britishers. Typically only Europeans were allowed into this market. Click on the photo for better view.
