New Market At Cantonment British Era Bangalore, 1905 Postcard

A 1905 postcard shows the New Market at Cantonment during British Era Bangalore (Bengaluru). The Market or New Market or Cantonment Market as it was variously called was an open-air marketplace. It existed from the 1820s when Bangalore was still a young city. The 4th Anglo-Mysore War ended slightly over 20 years ago at that time. By 1933 the New Market would become a covered market after it was housed in a building called Russell Market.

Named after the then, T B Russell, municipal commissioner of Bangalore City. He was the one who had taken the initiative and the drive to construct a building for the market. It was completed in 1933 and named after Russell, who by then had retired to England. Russell Market catered to the many European populations of the city and surrounding areas. Some of them can be seen vaguely in the picture. Click on the image to enlarge.

Did you know- the building was designed by WH Murphy, executive engineer, of the Cantonment Municipal Council. Murphy Town was named after him.
