King George & Queen Mary’s Arrival In Bombay – 3 PCs 1911
Three 1911 postcards of King George V and Queen Mary’s arrival in Bombay (Mumbai). Arriving at Bombay Harbour by the royal ship “HMS Medina” on Dec 2nd, 1911. Customarily, with a hectic schedule. The King and Queen arrive to attend the Delhi Durbar held in their honor on December 14. In these three postcards, the royal couple are seen landing at Apollo Bunder.
Ferried from the royal ship Medina that is anchored off deeper waters. The arrival of King George & Queen Mary created great interest amongst the people and press alike in India. This was the first time a British Monarch stepped foot on Indian soil. Another of the postcards shows them walking towards the amphitheater built especially for this occasion. Did you know- after the countless stopovers across the country their last stop would be in Calcutta. From where they would proceed to Bombay by a royal train to still more days of hectic schedule before leaving on the Medina to England.
