Indian Cavalry In Europe During WW1, 1914 Postcard
A 1914 photo postcard of the Indian Cavalry In Europe during WW1. Indian Cavalry Lancers in Europe going to the front in 1914. This was an unwanted and unfortunate war where millions would die. Around 1.3 million Indian troops served in the great war or the First World War in Europe.
Out of which around 74,000 of them died in battle. Today these Indian soldiers who served in the war in Europe are considered forgotten heroes. Many books and allies paid tribute to the sacrifices of Canadians, Australians, New Zealanders, and South Africans. Even the movies would immortalize these allied soldiers.
But nothing much was mentioned about the 1.3 million Indian soldiers who served along with them in Europe, Africa, Palestine, etc. The great Nobel Prize winner, Rabindranath Tagore, said about the war “We, the famished, ragged ragamuffins of the East are to win freedom for all humanity!” Click on the photo for better view.

Did you know- the British went ahead and built the triumphal arch the “India Gate” in New Delhi in 1931. A popular monument today, that is visited by hundreds daily, who have no idea that it commemorates the Indian soldiers who lost their lives fighting in WW1.
