Governor Of British Bombay Driving Through Walkeshwar, 1900 Postcard
A 1900 postcard of the Governor of British Bombay (Mumbai) Driving through Walkeshwar. He appears to be on his official state carriage escorted by his mounted guards. Probably on his way to his official residence at the Government House at Malabar Point. The postcard image is from an 1864 painting.
The Bombay Presidency was under the British East Company, as was the case with Madras and Bengal Presidencies. The governors of the presidencies were mainly British. Other than the Presidencies the princely states were under the control of the British. Walkeshwar is on the southern side of Malabar Hill, neighbouring Chowpatty Beach.
One of its notable landmark is the famous Walkeshwar Temple. Dedicated to Shiva, it was built in the 11th century. Close by another notable landmark is the Banganga tank of the temple. Malabar Hill takes its name from the pirates, known as malabaris, who were from the Malabar coast (Kerala), the Hill was their hideout.
Did you know- today Walkeshwar is an upmarket area of Mumbai, close by is the Raj Bhavan it was once the British Governor’s residence.
