This book is a commentary and translation of the first historic maritime journey outside Europe. European countries in the Middle Ages scrambled to find the source of pepper the valuable spice that was traded in Europe for centuries. The source was a closely guarded secret kept by the Arab spice traders. The Arab traders regularly visited Portugal. However, they disclosed the secret after threats and intimidation by the Portuguese.
With the King’s blessing and much help, Vasco Da Gama was chosen to lead the flotilla. The Portuguese set sail halfway around the world in 1497 to reach India. They reached the unexplored land of Calicut (Kozhikode) on the Malabar Coast. Vasco Da Gama’s expedition landed in Calicut in 1498. They were initially well received on arrival by the Zamorin- the hereditary monarch of the Kingdom with great hospitality.
