Construction In Progress of Parliament House Delhi, 1925 Postcard
This 1925 postcard shows the construction in progress of the old Parliament House in Delhi. Also known as the legislative building in British era times. Designed by British architects Herbert Baker and Edwin Lutyens for the new Indian capital of New Delhi. It housed at that time the Council of State (Rajya Sabha), Legislative Assembly (Lok Sabha), and Chamber of Princes (Library).
The construction began in 1921 and was completed by 1927. Although it was opened only in 1929. Henry Baker had produced a triangular-designed parliament house with three chambers and a central hall. However, Lutyens’s design, believed to have been inspired by the circular shape of an ancient Hindu temple was approved. A new Parliament House was inaugurated in 2023 replacing this older one.
