Broadway In Bangalore – Old Postcard 1915

This is an old 1915 photo postcard of Broadway in Bangalore, now Bengaluru. Not sure of the exact location although the title reads “Broadway Bangalore.” But most likely cantonment by the look of the market scene, perhaps Russell’s Market area.

See post-Vintage Postcard Bangalore The Cantonment Market

Because of the Cantonment Market’s rapid growth. In 1927 T B Russell the then Municipal Commissioner of Bengaluru had initiated the construction of a building with a clock tower for the market. After its inauguration in 1933, they renamed the new building to Russell Market in his honor (he had by then settled in England).

Much before the market was called Cantonment Market or Russell Market it was initially called New Market. And in the late 19th century before the market came up it was a marshy land, a habitation for birds and animals.
