Bangalore’s Famous Commercial Street, 1955 Postcard

An old 1955 photo postcard of Bangalore’s (Bengaluru) famous shopping center Commercial Street. Once a popular shopping center for the European residents of British-era Bangalore. Winston Churchill bought imported articles, especially his cigars from this street. This narrow road was aptly named Commercial Street there was nothing that was not available from here.

There was once a saying that you could buy practically anything from here, from a pin to gold to a plane. The street in this 1955 b & w photo looks quiet and unhurried unlike what it is today. Commercial Street branches off from Cavalry Road, now Kamaraj Road. Notably, it is crisscrossed with many narrow bye-lanes. M G Road (South Parade Road), Cantonment, Cubbon Park, etc are all in close proximity. The historically old Bangalore Cantonment Railway Station is located close by. Did you know – that there are several rows of residential houses as well, built at the time of colonial rule.
