Bangalore Council Hall, Landmark of Civic History, 1940 Postcard
A 1940 postcard showcases Bangalore’s stately Council Hall, today known as Sir Puttanna Chetty Town Hall, standing proudly beside Cubbon Park. Completed in 1935, the impressive Neoclassical landmark originally housed the Bangalore City Municipality and soon became the city’s foremost venue for civic meetings, cultural performances, and public gatherings.
Named after Sir Puttanna Chetty, a respected businessman, philanthropist, and former Chairman of the Bangalore Municipality, the Town Hall remains one of Bengaluru’s best-known heritage buildings. A little-known fact is that its original seating capacity of 1,038 was later reduced to 810, creating a more spacious and comfortable auditorium for audiences. This is a rare photo postcard of the Bangalore Council Hall, a landmark of Civic History.
Did you know- since its completion in 1935, the building has witnessed political speeches, freedom movement meetings, theatrical performances, concerts, exhibitions, and countless public gatherings.
