View Of Harbour From Apollo Bunder Bombay, 1900 Photo

A 1900 photograph of the view of harbour from Apollo Bunder in Bombay (Mumbai). Apollo Bunder was where the Gateway of India came up in 1924. Formerly, it was the landing jetty for passengers arriving by steamships. However, by the 1920s, the Bombay Dockyard expanded to accommodate passenger ships. Consequently, Apollo Bunder’s use as a harbour declined considerably.

A crowd of people seems to be enjoying the view, and two European ladies enjoy a stroll. Horse carts seem to be patiently waiting for potential passengers. It must be remembered that motor cars had not come onto the scene yet. The future Taj Mahal Hotel was yet to be built, it would come up by 1903, facing the Apollo Bunder. Adjacent to that was the Royal Bombay Yacht Club. Click on the photo to enlarge.

Did you know – the conical room on the left is supposedly the tide gauge room.
