Round Temple Sandhurst Road Bombay – 2 Postcards 1920
There are two 1920s photo postcards in this post illustrating Sandhurst Road and Round Temple in Bombay, now Mumbai. The unique round temple is visible in both the postcards that is also called Gol Dewal. But at some period of time, its bulbous-shaped dome gave way to a conical shape which is more prevalent in Hindu shrines.

Sometime after India’s independence, the street was renamed Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel Road. Clearly, electric trams chugged along this street (see postcard). Once a common mode of transport in Mumbai that undeniably added to the city’s charm. But sadly this iconic transport was discontinued in the early 1960s for some reason. The place has a railway station also called Sandhurst Road that is part of the Mumbai Central Railway line. Click on the photo for better view.

Did you know- the street was named after Lord Sandhurst who was the Governor of colonial Bombay from 1895 to 1900.
