Pensive Lady British India Watercolour Sketch, 1837

An 1837 watercolour sketch of a pensive European Lady in British India. This is a small sized charming watercolour sketch from the gifted Major A.C. Hutchinson. He was from the Bengal Artillery during British India era. The sketch depicts a beautiful young European lady in a pensive mood. The sketch was probably taken in a cantonment area somewhere in India.
Not much is known of Major A. C. Hutchinson except that he was with the Bengal Artillery. Music and art were much approved and apparently became an accepted part of the British Indian army. Soldiers were encouraged to bring out their talent mostly suitable to their environs. Which in most cases was music and drawing. These amateur artists were not far short of the professionals, their drawings give a captivating insight into the environments they normally are located in.
