Oldsmobile One Of The Earliest Cars In Bombay, 1932 Photo2

This is a 1932 photo of one of an Oldsmobile Model R that was once one of the earliest cars in Bombay (Mumbai). The Model R or Curved Dash Oldsmobile was first introduced in 1901. A handwritten date 1932 is marked on the back. This is one of the earliest automobiles that ran in Bombay in 1903.

The car was petrol-driven and resembled a horseless carriage. Introduced in 1901 it quickly became popular in the USA. The car had a top speed of 32 kmph, it got its name from the curved front that protected the legs of the passenger. A man drove one from Detroit, Michigan to New York City (991km) in 7 days to deliver it to a customer.

Potential customers were impressed by this long journey, and 1,000 orders immediately followed for the Oldsmobile Curved Dash. The Oldsmobile was popular because of its versatility and ease of driving. The text on the photo indicates that it was one of the earliest motor cars in the city. Bombay undoubtedly may have had the most imported motor cars during the British era. Click on the photo to get a better view.
