Mumbai once a group of seven islands joined into a single landmass by the Britishers.
For centuries, the islands were under the control of successive native empires. The Portuguese were the first European colonist of Bombay. Later the British East India Company took over after it was gifted to King Charles as a dowry by the Portuguese. After the opening of the Suez Canal in 1869 Mumbai became a financial power.
