This is an old coffee table book on Madras, now Chennai. Profusely illustrated with old photos of an old and newer city of Chennai. From where it all began Fort St George to the Government House in Guindy. It includes Mount Road, once one of the best boulevards in India, George Town, the first town in Chennai.

This old book of 1995- “Madras Its Past & Its Present” also includes Marina Beach Road, Chepauk Palace, Triplicane, Spencers, Central Station, and so on. Chennai was founded by the British East India Company in the early 1600s. Trading outposts were created allowing access to the sources of the highly valued Indian cloth with permission from the local chieftains. In the next two centuries Chennai, along with Mumbai and Kolkata all British-created cities became one of the three legs of the powerful British Empire in India. Click on the photo for better view.
