Hogg Market (New Market) British Era Calcutta, 1905 Postcard
A 1905 postcard of the Hogg Market (New Market) In British Era Calcutta (Kolkata). The Hogg Market was designed by an architect from the East Indian Railway Company. Gothic and Romanesque design style quite similar to the design style of the Madras Central Railway Station.
It was opened in 1874 for Europeans only, who were largely based in and around Calcutta. However, its opening spread fast by word of mouth amongst the Europeans all over India. It consequently became one of the must-visit markets for them. Originally called New Market, it was bestowed with the official name of Sir Stuart Hogg Market in 1903, although colloquially the old name would stick till today.
Did you know – Sir Stuart Hogg, then the Chairman of Calcutta Corporation, had shown persistent support for the plans to build the New Market.
