Four Views of The Taj Mahal Hotel Bombay – 4 Postcards 1905
Four postcards dating from around 1905 to 1920, with four different views of the Taj Mahal Hotel in Bombay (Mumbai). One of them shows the Gateway of India as well, it faces the Taj Mahal Hotel. It was rumoured that Jamsetji Tata built the Taj in 1903 in a retaliatory move. Because he was denied entry into a Europeans-only Watson’s Hotel in Fort, Mumbai.
Watson’s was an elite and popular hotel with the Europeans at that time. But the Taj overshadowed it and is today the most respected and iconic hotel in India. Watson’s has long ceased to function. The Taj acquired the British-owned Greens Restaurant next door (see the first postcard) and converted it into a high-rise building the Taj Tower in 1973. Click on the photo for better view.
