Electric Tram & Mount Road Madras – Old Photo 1938

This is an old 1938 photograph of the electric tram and Mount Road in Madras, now Chennai. This photo contains some iconic landmarks of the period. They are the tram, New Elphinstone Theatre, Mount Road, and the quaint buildings of a bygone Chennai. The city’s tram service first started operation in 1895, which became the first electrified tramway in India.

See post- Electric Tram & Madras Central Railway Station – Old Photo.

Unfortunately, this popular tramway shut down its operations in 1953, because of bankruptcy, labour problems, and politics. But along with it, the city lost a piece of its charisma. The New Elphinstone Theatre opened its doors in 1916 and wound up business in the 1970s. It was the poshest cinema hall in Chennai at one time. The New Elphinstone was dismantled and sprung up in its place was the multistoried Raheja complex.

Mount Road definitely needs no introduction to those people who may know the city even to a little extent. Since it is the main arterial road of the city. That connects south of Fort St George all the way to St Thomas mount. Later renamed as Anna Salai, and was once and possibly still is a high-end shopping and commercial avenue. It was a posh shopping avenue and a boulevard for the British at one time, but today it assumes a crowded street.

Did you know- Sir Francis Spring, the father of modern Madras Port, had the first car (numbered MC1) on its street in 1903.
