Esplanade Road & Tram Bombay, 1905 Postcard
A 1905 postcard of the Esplanade Road and tram in Bombay (Mumbai). A beautiful sight of the Flora Fountain area that links it to the Esplanade Road in the British Bombay era. The view seems to be from the Watsons Hotel once notorious for whites only entry. The Esplanade Road is located in Fort, South Bombay. It has since been renamed Mahatma Gandhi Road after India’s post-colonial period.
The street is studded with British India-era heritage buildings. Looking straight ahead is the Oriental Building, and the tower on the right is that of the St Thomas Church. Further back is the obscure outline of the domes of the Victoria Terminus and Municipal building. Pictured in the foreground is the city’s electric tram. Once a charming sight and the city’s iconic transportation but ceased operations in the early 1960s. Click on the photo for better view.
Did you know- that Fort George once existed here, it was torn down in the 1860s to make way for more real estate.
