Before The Cochin Shipyard Was Built – Old Postcard 1950

This is an old early 1950s photo postcard before the Cochin Shipyard was built. This is probably the place before the great Cochin Shipyard (CSL) came up in 1972. The view is seemingly from the Robert Bristow built Venduruthy Bridge, Kochi. See my post- Robert Bristow’s Cochin Harbour – 2 Old Postcards 1947. Robert Bristow was the architect of the man-made Willingdon Island.

The waterfront is part of the Great Vembanad lake one of the longest lakes in India. See also a cluster of cargo boats or kettuvallams of a bygone era anchored near the waterfront. These once ubiquitous and charming kettuvallam boats have almost disappeared from the scene. The boats hauled cargo from distant places and sailed shore to shore delivering goods containing market produce, grains, husk, even stones, etc.

Today the touristy Kerala Houseboats are an imitation of these kettuvallams. Read more- HOW KETTUVALLAMS (HOUSEBOATS) ORIGINATED IN KERALA.

Did you know- Kerala also earned the sobriquet ‘God’s Own Country’.
