1974 Photo Kerala Cargo Boat On The Backwaters

1974 Photo Kerala Cargo Boat On The Backwaters. This is a news photo of Kerala with a cargo boat plying on its backwaters. To move the boat forward, the boatman pushes a pole onto the riverbed. There is a typed message on the back about the cargo boats,

stating that these boats were first introduced into Kerala by ancient Chinese traders. You can read about Chinese traders in my post- c1974 News Photo Cochin Fishing Nets. Except for the typed matter about Kerala and its cargo boats there are no date or others details mentioned.

The photo dates probably to 1970s. Cargo boats on the Kerala backwaters were once very common, sadly it has almost faded out because of the preference for faster-motorized transport.  Although the legacy still continues in the form of houseboats which are a major draw in Kerala’s tourism today.

Did you know- at one time there were enormous cargo boats or huge kettuvalloms, with enough space for the family and cargo for longer journeys on the Kerala backwaters.
