Bangalore Club Where Churchill Was Once A Member, 1905 Postcard

A 1905 postcard of the Bangalore Club where the famous statesman Winston Churchill was once a member. Established in 1868, it is probably the oldest social Club in Bangalore. Situated in Richmond Town on an 11-acre plot in the heart of the city. It was formerly known as the “United Service Club”, later renamed “Bangalore Club” from 1946.

The building shown in this Postcard is still surprisingly intact today, unlike many other colonial clubs that have torn down or modified their buildings in a sort of merciless way. This club at the time of the British Raj era had elite members from the higher echelons of the military, civil services, Indian royalty, etc.

One famous member was Winston Churchill the former Prime Minister of the UK. He is also famously remembered for his library dues of Rs 13 owed to a club from 1896, it was in this very club the incident took place. Years later the establishment wrote it off as bad debt after realizing it was irrecoverable.

Did you know- that Sir M Visvesvaraya the then Diwan of Mysore arrived at the Bangalore Club he was told to remove his Mysore turban and wear a coat. He then set up the Century Club in Bangalore in c1912.
