Vintage “Laxmi” Raja Ravi Varma’s Advertising Oleograph 1905
A vintage “Laxmi” Raja Ravi Varma’s advertising oleograph from 1905. This is another rare Ravi Varma oleograph with an advertisement for the British firm Vinolia. See the previous one, Vintage “Vishnu On Sheshnag” Raja Ravi Varma Advertisement Oleograph 1905.
After Fritz Schleicher acquired the loss-making Ravi Varma Fine Arts Lithographic Press (FAL press). He made provisions for the printing of lucrative advertisement oleographs, postcards, labels, etc. This copy was one of the examples of the advertisement oleograph from that period, It displays the Vinolia Soap advertisement, a largely British owned toiletry company.
The Press also made advertisement oleographs for Indian companies. Vinolia soaps and toiletries were imported into India during the colonial era. Since Raja Ravi Varma’s Gods and Goddesses oleographs had mass appeal throughout India. It was the best advertising solution any brand could have. Postcard advertising was the rage, however oleographs became a new medium of advertising at the time because of its mass appeal. An empty Vinolia Soap’s carton box is shown here from our collection.
