View Of Jama Masjid In Agra, 1890 Photo
An 1890 photo of the Jama Masjid or Mosque in Agra. Apparently, the Taj Mahal in Agra was built by Shah Jahan, as a mausoleum to his beloved wife, Mumtaz Mahal. However, not many, know that his eldest daughter Jahanara Begum built the Jama Masjid in Agra. Built with red sandstones the mosque took six years to complete with a workforce of 5000 men.
And was completed in 1648, at a huge cost of five lakh rupees at the time. It is one of the largest mosques after the Juma Masjid Mosque in Delhi, which was built by Shah Jahan. The mosque accommodates around 10,000 people. Agra was the main city or the capital of the Mughal Empire for two centuries (16th and 17th). Also shown are the homes and bazaars outside the mosque.
