Viceroy’s Camp At The Delhi Durbar, Old Photo 1877
Old 1877 photograph of the Viceroy’s Camp at the Delhi Durbar of 1877. Variously known as the Imperial Assemblage, Delhi Durbar, Proclamation Durbar, etc. The view is that of the Viceroy’s Camp. Mounted soldiers are shown at the camp. The officers are supposedly busy in preparation. At the back are the tents apparently for their lodging.
Wheeled cannons with cannon balls are noticeable in the photo. The cannons are probably for the ceremonial gun salute. Lord Lytton the Viceroy Of India organized this first of the durbars. Proclaiming Queen Victoria’s additional title of “Empress of India”. The Delhi Durbars were grand ceremonies not seen since the Moghul times.
There were three Delhi Durbars in 1877, 1903, and 1911 in the British colonial period. The 1903 Durbar is believed to be the grandest of them. Organized by Lord Curzon to the smallest detail. Although amidst all the extravagance, India faced famine from 1876 to 1878. This is a rare photo from the Imperial Assemblage of 1877. Click on the photo for better view.
