The Inauguration Day of New Delhi, 1931 Photo

A rare 1931 news photo of the Inauguration of New Delhi. “The New Seat Of British Rule In India – The inauguration of the new government building which will serve as India’s new capital at Delhi. The viceroy is just about to enter his coach after unveiling the four dominion columns, two of which can be seen in this photo. The Imperial Secretariat buildings are in the background.”

The above news of the inauguration of New Delhi appeared in international newspapers in 1931. A parade of troops on horseback and foot had smartly turned out for the occasion. The Viceroy Lord Irwin inaugurated the opening, he was accompanied by his wife Lady Irwin. The inauguration celebrations and showiness were carried out on a grand scale that lasted two weeks. The viceregal couple Lord and Lady Irwin hosted the events officially. Click on the photo for better view.

Did you know- there were four Dominion Columns, presented by Canada, Australia, New Zealand, and South Africa. These still exist in front of the main gates of the Secretariat Buildings (North and South Blocks).
