Street Scene In The City Of Bombay, 1873 Print

An 1873 print of the “Street Scene In The City Of Bombay”. This 11 x 8 inch page is from a book dating to 1873. Bombay (now Mumbai) was a proper cosmopolitan city then, it had the Parsis, Jews, half Portuguese, Armenians, Afghans, Chinese, with even a small Japanese population.

This is not to mention the various Indian communities from different parts of India who were also based in Bombay. These communities were an integral part and parcel of the great development that took place. From the time they were encouraged to settle down in Bombay by the East India Company after uniting the group of seven islands into a single landmass by reclamation.

They were given parcels of land mainly around the fort area to establish trade and commerce. The East India Company granted them considerable business opportunities with social and religious freedom. This culminated in the arrival of many communities of Indian and foreign origins. Slowly built up a business ranging from cotton to textiles to bullion to industries and so on. And in the course of time, this maximum city went on to become a financial powerhouse.
