Rare Views of British Era Madras – 4 Postcards 1900
Four postcards of some rare views of British Era Madras (Chennai), from around 1900 to 1930s. The views are of the General Hospital Road Near Moore Market, China Bazar Road, Nungambakkam High Road, and Soda Water Shop. The General Hospital Road is one of the main arterial roads in Chennai. The General Hospital and the Chennai Central Station are located here. The China Bazar Road is now the NSC Bose Road. And is one of the main thoroughfares of the commercial area of George Town.
At its eastern end is the famous Parry’s Corner and just beyond that is the harbour. The Nungambakkam High Road is again a main thoroughfare of the Nungambakkam area of Chennai. This is one of the places Britishers took residence once they spread out of Fort St George in the 19th century. Not entirely sure which part of Madras the soda water shop was located in. These shops largely existed till the 1980s-90s, it is likely that they have lost to modernism now.
Did you know – in the early part of the 20th century, Nungambakkam became an upper-class European residential area, housing civil servants and influential members of the city administration.
