Queen Mary At The Taj Mahal, 1911 Print
This is a page of “The Sphere”, a British newspaper from December 16, 1911. That displayed a full-page picture of Queen Mary’s after she visited the Taj Mahal. Meanwhile, her husband King George V embarked on a hunting trip in the Nepal Terai. Queen Mary had other itineraries one of them was the visit to the great mausoleum, the Taj Mahal, at Agra.
The imperial couple first landed at Apollo Bunder, Bombay on December 2nd, 1911. Proceeding to Delhi for the Durbar but only after a few days of a busy schedule in the city. The King and Queen’s hectic itineraries included tours to Nepal, Calcutta, Patna, Rajputana, etc.
On the queen’s arrival at Agra, she would visit the Taj Mahal twice, then on to a tour of Agra Fort and Fatehpur Sikri. She would then leave for Jodhpur, Jaipur, Ajmer, Bundi, etc. After her round at Rajputana, she left for Bankipore near Patna by the royal train. Rejoining the King in Patna, later both travelling to Calcutta with their entourage.
The royal couple were received at Calcutta station by the Viceroy Lord Hardinge and Lady Hardinge. They then crossed the River Hooghly by a steamship, warmly welcomed at Prinsep Ghat in which two thousand people were seated in a makeshift arena. After some days of busy schedule, both travelled back to Bombay by the royal train. From there departing for England after involving with more social and official engagements in the city.
