Prince & Princess of Wales In Mumbai, 3 Old PCs 1905

There are three old 1905 postcards of George Prince of Wales and Princess Mary in Bombay, now Mumbai. Prince and Princess of Wales (later George V and Queen Mary) were in India in 1905. They would undertake a tour of the Indian sub-continent from November 1905 to March 1906.

Covering a greater area than embarked by any other British Royal Family members. The tour covered Burma in the east to Madras, Bangalore, Mysore, and Hyderabad in the south. Karachi, Quetta, Rawalpindi, Lahore, and so on in then undivided India. Jammu, Simla, Delhi, Calcutta, etc Then Jaipur, Udaipur, Bikaner etc. Literally crisscrossing the whole of the sub-continent.

See the map of the royal tour in India.

George Prince of Wales & Mary Princess of Wales first landed in Bombay in November 1905. These postcards show a part of their itinerary while in the city. The first one shows their arrival in Bombay in a royal procession. The 2nd shows the Prince laying the foundation stone of The Royal Museum Of Western (later the Prince of Wales Museum). The 3rd postcard shows the laying of the foundation stone of the New Alexandra Dock (now Indira Dock). Click on the photo for better view.

Did you know- the royal couple only received a partial view of India. They were ‘protected from the true plight of the Indian people.
