British Prince & Princess Of Wales At Bangalore Railway Station, 1906 Photo

1906 stereo photo of Prince George and Princess Mary at Bangalore Railway Station during the Royal Tour of India.

A 1906 stereo photograph captures the British royal couple, George, Prince of Wales (later King Emperor George V), and Princess Mary (later Queen Mary), during their royal visit to Bangalore (Bengaluru). The photograph shows the Prince and Princess at the Bangalore Railway Station, shortly after their arrival by the royal train.

The royal couple had travelled from Madras (Chennai) to Mysore and then to Bangalore, as part of their grand 1905–1906 Royal Tour of India and Burma. This extensive tour was one of the most elaborate undertaken by British royalty during the colonial era. Beginning at Bombay (Mumbai), where they landed by a special royal steamer in November 1905, marking the start of their months-long journey across the Indian subcontinent.

Their itinerary included a wide range of princely states and major cities—Bombay, Indore, Udaipur, Jaipur, Bikaner, Lahore, Peshawar, The Khyber, Rawalpindi, Jammu, Amritsar, Delhi, Agra, Gwalior, Lucknow, Calcutta (Kolkata), Rangoon (Yangon), Madras, Mysore, Bangalore, Hyderabad, Benares (Varanasi), Quetta, and Karachi.

The tour not only symbolized the strength of the British Empire’s relationship with India but also served as a way for the Prince and Princess to engage directly with Indian rulers and the colonial administration. This photograph depicts a historical record reflecting the pageantry and political significance of the royal visit during the British Raj. The royal couple left India, from Bombay, in March 1906.
