Panoramic View Of Kashmir Valley & Jhelum River 1908 Photo

1900 panoramic view of Kashmir Valley and Jhelum River surrounded by Himalayas and Pir Panjal Range -- past-india.com

A 1900 stereo photograph captures a breathtaking panoramic view of the Kashmir Valley and the Jhelum River, also known as the Vale of Kashmir. Surrounded by the mighty Himalayas and the Pir Panjal Range, this high-altitude valley lies over 5,000 feet above sea level. Scientists have long suggested that the entire Kashmir Valley was once a vast lake that eventually drained to form this lush basin, stretching 130 km in length and 40 km in width.

The River Jhelum, seen meandering through the valley in this photograph, exits through the Baramula Pass to the plains of Punjab. Within this enchanting valley lie the famous city of Srinagar, Dal Lake, and Wular Lake. The fertile alluvial soil supports the cultivation of crocus flowers, from which the world-renowned Kashmiri saffron is produced—prized for its aroma, flavor, and medicinal value.

During the British colonial era, the region was a popular hunting ground for Britishers and Maharajas. The surrounding hills were once home to musk deer, Chamois, and several species of bears, now rarely seen. This historic stereo image beautifully preserves the timeless charm of Kashmir’s natural grandeur. Click image to enlarge.

Did you know- the valley was the resort of Mughal emperors, notably Jahangir, who had constructed the picturesque Shalimar Bagh Mughal Gardens and buildings in the vale for his empress, Noor Jahan.
