Ooty Toy Train Steam Locomotive’s Plan, 1925 Print
An old 1925 print of the Ooty Toy Train Steam Locomotive’s plan. This print is from The Engineering, dated August 7, 1925. It features the technical plan of the rack and pinion system steam locomotive of the famous Ooty toy train. Titled “Rack Adhesion Locomotive For The Nilgiri Railway, India”.
The locomotive was constructed by the “Swiss Locomotive And Machine Works Engineers” in Switzerland. To see an earlier post of an original blueprint of the same toy train locomotive, go to Nilgiri Railway, Ooty Toy Train Locomotive’s Blueprint 1890. The rack and pinion system (RPS) incorporated in the steam loco was to get traction on the steep hills of the Nilgiris.
There are various makes of rack and pinion systems in the world. The Nilgiri Mountain Railway incorporated the Swiss Abt system. Devised by Carl Roman Abt, a Swiss locomotive engineer in 1882. Check out the pictures of the locos and its Abt system’s manufacturing. The Nilgiri Mountain Railway was the second hill railway to be built after the Darjeeling Himalayan Railway.
Did you know – the Nilgiris was the first in Asia to use the rack railway because the incline was so steep. The railway was more difficult than the Darjeeling line.
