Ooty In The19th Century, 1880 Photo
Old 1880 photo of Ooty in the 19th century. This cool hill station town is located in the Nilgiris or the Blue Mountains. And is 2nd of my Samuel Bourne Albumen photo of the town. Both show an almost virgin landscape of Ooty, unlike what it is today.
Just as Simla was a summer getaway to the Delhi British Raj administrators, likewise Ooty was to the Madras Presidency’s European administrators. It still retains some of its old-world charm, romantic meadows, enchanting lake, quaint old British Raj bungalows, and cottages. And not to forget the ever-popular Nilgiri Mountain Railway. A quintessential part of the Nilgiris. Though Ooty is now, and unfortunately, getting to be heavily commercialized and overcrowded. Click on the photo for better view
Did you know- The Nilgiri Mountain Railway was awarded UNESCO Heritage status in 2005. The train is also the slowest in India it takes 4 to 5 hours to reach Ooty from Mettupalayam.
