Military March-Past At Bangalore Parade Ground In Colonial Era, 1928 Photo

A 1928 photo shows a military march-past at Bangalore’s parade ground in the colonial era. A British military regimental parade seems to be in progress at the Parade Ground in the cantonment.

A large crowd can be seen on the sidelines watching the military march-past. Also noticeable is the British Union Jack flying from a flagpost in the foreground. After the British defeated Tipu Sultan’s army, they captured the Bangalore Fort during the Anglo-Mysore War.

The British stayed back, and Bangalore grew outward from the fort to what it is today. It progressed to a major city of South India with an important military base and cantonment. The cantonment was one of the largest during the British Raj era. Cantonments were a self-contained city within a city, which included markets, shops, restaurants, places of worship, and so on.
