Inside View of Russell Market In British Era Bangalore, 1935 Postcard
A 1935 postcard showing the inside view of the Russell Market in British Era Bangalore (Bengaluru). It was commonly called the “New Market” before the open market was covered with a building. The building was opened in 1933, it was named after T B Russell Municipal Commissioner of Bangalore.
The design of the building leaned more towards the Indian architectural style than the usual European or Indo-Saracenic style. Russell Market catered primarily to the needs of the British military and civil services personnel and their families. Some European men and women can be seen inside the busy market. Today it is hugely popular with shoppers and sellers from all over India. Click on the image to enlarge.
