Great Victoria Terminus Bombay – Old Photo 1910
This is an old 1910 photo that shows the Great Victoria Terminus of Bombay, now Mumbai. Almost the complete length of the building is visible including the platform shed at the back. The Victoria Terminus (VT) was built as offices and a terminal for the Great Indian Peninsula Railway and is now officially called Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus (CST).

Before it came up it was known as the Bori Bunder station. From where the first train journey in India took place in 1853.

Located at the Fort area of Mumbai, the railway station building was designed by F W Stevens. The work started on Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus in 1878 and was completed in 1888. Today the station is iconic in character, for many people it has become a visual symbol synonymous with Mumbai itself. Notice the line of electric trams shown in the photo that ran in this great city at that time. Click on the photo for better view.

Did you know- St Pancras station, London was an important design source for the Victoria Terminus for R L Stevens. Because of its resemblance, the Madras Central Station is also probably a copy of the St Pancras station.
