Cotton Cleaning British Era Bombay, 1910 Postcard

Old Postcard – Cotton Cleaning Bombay 1910

A 1910 postcard of cotton cleaning work during the British Era in Bombay (Mumbai). A traditional way of cleaning and sorting cotton at the time. Cotton farming and trade took off in India when the exports from America to England declined greatly because of the Civil War in America.

The British then took the task of encouraging local farmers, especially in the deeper hinterlands of India to meet their huge cotton demand. The cotton export boom took off like never before in Bombay. Cowasji Nanabhai Davar, a wealthy Parsi industrialist, diversified by opening the first cotton textile mill in Bombay in 1854. The mill Bombay Spinning and Weaving Mills had opened in Tardeo.

Did you know- the railway was introduced into India by the British for one of the sole purposes of transporting cotton from deep interiors of India to Bombay. The other was for the transport of British troops.
