Coonoor Town In The Nilgiris Near Ooty – 2 Postcards 1910

coonoor near ooty

Two old 1910 postcards of Coonoor in the Nilgiris near Ooty. The Nilgiris is also known as the Blue Mountains. This is because the mist that forms on the mountains gives an illusion of blueness hence the name. Coonoor was a part of the discovery of John Sullivan’s team that discovered Ooty. It is now the second-largest town in this hill station.

One of its links is the beautiful toy train under the Nilgiri Mountain Railway or NMR. A part of this railway line can be seen in the 2nd postcard. Which is one of the steepest railways in the world and needs the rack and pinion system to climb the steep mountains. Notably, the toy train at Coonoor station shifts from a steam locomotive to a diesel locomotive. The train then continues on its last leg of the journey to Ooty. The procedure is repeated while on its return journey, steam loco replaces the diesel one for the downward journey to Mettupalayam.
