Coconut Palm Grove British Era Bombay, 1903 Postcard

A 1903 postcard of a coconut palm grove during the British Era in Bombay (Mumbai). The palm grove in this scene is an area proliferated by coconut palms. Both sides of the road are lined with coconut palms and interspersed with beautiful quaint tiled houses. This is a throwback to the days of a lush and unhurried Bombay.

The city’s radical transformation from a once thickly forested, marshy land and rocky terrain to what it is today is quite amazing. However, it is today one of the biggest concrete jungles. After the colonization by the Portuguese and later the British, the land was used more for rice cultivation, coconut plantation, toddy tapping, and so on. Mostly the Kolis had inhabited the many fishing villages that dotted Bombay. Like the Kolis, the Bhandaris and a few other communities were Bombay’s original inhabitants.

Did you know – some places in Mumbai got their names from trees. The place “Parel” got its name from the Paral Tree, “Wadala” is from the Wad or Banyan Tree. Places starting from “Chinch” like Chinchpokli, Chinchbunder, etc were named after the tamarind tree.
